Introducing Yourself

Italiano A1A11. Unit 1: First Meetings

Introducing Yourself in Italian

Welcome to your first Italian lesson! When meeting people for the first time, you will want to tell them your name. In Italian, there are two very common ways to do this.

1. Mi chiamo (My name is)

Literally meaning ‘I call myself’, mi chiamo is the most common way to state your name.

2. Io sono (I am)

You can also use io sono, which simply means ‘I am’. Note that in Italian, the pronoun io (I) is often dropped because the verb form already makes it clear.

Common Mistakes

Don’t say ‘Il mio nome è’ for everyday introductions—while technically correct, native speakers almost always use mi chiamo or sono!
