Describing Friends

Describing Friends in Italian

In Italian, adjectives change their endings to match the gender (masculine or feminine) of the person you are describing. Most adjectives end in -o for masculine and -a for feminine.

Basic Adjective Endings

Adjectives that end in -e in the singular (like intelligente or simpatico variants, though simpatico follows the -o/-a rule) stay the same for both masculine and feminine, but take -i in the plural!

Common Mistakes

Don’t forget to match the gender! Saying “Maria è alto” is incorrect because Maria is feminine; you must say “Maria è alta“.
