At the Cafe

Italiano A1A14. Unit 4: Food and Drink

Welcome to the Italian Bar!

In Italy, a bar is usually a coffee shop where you stand at the counter for an espresso, or sit down for a pastry. Let’s learn how to order like a local!

Key Vocabulary

Useful Patterns

To order something politely, use Vorrei un… (I would like a…) or Prendo un… (I’ll have a…).

Italian English
Un caffè, per favore. An espresso, please.
Un cornetto, grazie. A croissant, thank you.

Common Mistakes

Don’t just say “Voglio” (I want) when ordering; it sounds too demanding. Always use Vorrei (I would like) or Prendo (I’ll take) instead!
