What Time Is It? ⏰
In Italian, asking and telling time is easy once you know a couple of key rules. Whether you are catching a train or meeting a friend, knowing how to tell time is essential for A1 learners!
Telling the Time
To tell the time in Italian, we usually use the feminine plural article le (the) before the hours, because we are implying le ore (the hours).
- È l’una. — It’s one o’clock. (Notice we use È instead of sono for one o’clock, and l’una instead of le una).
- Sono le due. — It’s two o’clock.
- Sono le tre. — It’s three o’clock.
- Sono le otto. — It’s eight o’clock.
Asking the Time
To ask ‘What time is it?’, use this common phrase:
- Che ora è? (or Che ore sono?) — What time is it?
Adding Minutes
To add minutes past the hour, use the word e (and):
- Sono le tre e dieci. — It’s ten past three.
- Sono le cinque e un quarto. — It’s quarter past five.
- Sono le sette e mezzo. — It’s half past seven.
Common Mistakes
⚠️ Don’t say: ‘Sono l’una.’
