Months and Seasons in Italian

In this lesson, you will learn the twelve months of the year and the four seasons in Italian. This will help you talk about dates, birthdays, and your favorite times of the year!

Months of the Year

Unlike in English, months in Italian do not start with a capital letter unless they begin a sentence. We usually use the preposition in (in) before a month.

• gennaio – January
• febbraio – February
• marzo – March
• aprile – April
• maggio – May
• giugno – June
• luglio – July
• agosto – August
• settembre – September
• ottobre – October
• novembre – November
• dicembre – December

The Four Seasons

Seasons also use the preposition in, but sometimes with articles (like in primavera in spring, but d’estate in summer).

• la primavera – spring
• l’estate – summer
• l’autunno – autumn
• l’inverno – winter

Common Mistakes

A common mistake is capitalizing the months (writing Gennaio instead of gennaio). Remember to keep them lowercase in the middle of a sentence!
