Mastering Regular -ERE Verbs
In Italian, verbs are grouped into three main categories based on their infinitive endings: -are, -ere, and -ire. In this lesson, we will focus on regular verbs that end in -ere, such as leggere (to read), scrivere (to write), and vedere (to see).
How to Conjugate
To conjugate a regular -ere verb, remove the -ere ending from the infinitive to find the root, and add the appropriate ending for each pronoun:
- io (I) -> -o (e.g., leggo – I read)
- tu (you singular) -> -i (e.g., scrivi – you write)
- lui / lei (he / she) -> -e (e.g., vede – he/she sees)
- noi (we) -> -iamo (e.g., leggiamo – we read)
- voi (you plural) -> -ete (e.g., scrivete – you all write)
- loro (they) -> -ono (e.g., vedono – they see)
Quick Examples
| Italian | English |
|---|---|
| Io leggo un libro. | I read a book. |
| Tu scrivi una lettera. | You write a letter. |
| Noi vediamo il mare. | We see the sea. |
Common Mistakes
A common beginner mistake is mixing up the endings with -are verbs. Remember that for -ere verbs, the ‘you’ form ends in -i and the ‘he/she’ form ends in -e!
