Frequency Adverbs in Italian
When talking about how often you do things, frequency adverbs are essential! In Italian, these words usually go directly after the conjugated verb.
The Golden Rule
Unlike English, where adverbs sometimes go before the verb (e.g., I always eat), Italian puts them right after (e.g., Io mangio sempre).
- Sempre – Always
- Spesso – Often
- A volte – Sometimes
- Raramente – Rarely
- Mai – Never
Examples
- Io studio sempre. (I always study.)
- Tu giochi spesso. (You often play.)
- Lui non mangia mai la pizza. (He never eats pizza. Note: ‘mai’ requires ‘non’ before the verb!)
Common Mistakes
Be careful with mai! When you use ‘mai’ to mean ‘never’, you must put non before the verb. Saying Io mangio mai is incorrect; it must be Io non mangio mai.
