Talking About the Weather in Italian
Welcome to Unit 9! In this lesson, you will learn how to describe the weather in Italian. Unlike English, where we usually say ‘It is hot’ using the verb ‘to be’, Italian often uses different verbs like fare (to make/do) or stands alone as a weather verb.
1. Weather with ‘Fa’ (It is…)
For temperature and general conditions, we use the verb fare in the third-person singular (fa):
- Fa caldo. – It is hot.
- Fa freddo. – It is cold.
- Fa bel tempo. – The weather is nice.
- Fa brutto tempo. – The weather is bad.
2. Action Verbs for Weather
Some weather conditions are verbs on their own:
- Piove. – It rains. / It is raining.
- Nevica. – It snows. / It is snowing.
3. Describing the Sky with ‘C’è’ (There is…)
To talk about what is in the sky, we use c’è (there is):
- C’è il sole. – It is sunny. (Literally: There is the sun.)
- C’è il vento. – It is windy.
- C’è la nebbia. – It is foggy.
- C’è il temporale. – There is a thunderstorm.
Common Mistakes
Mistake: Saying *’È caldo’* for ‘It is hot’ when talking about the weather.
Correction: Use Fa caldo. (*È caldo* is used more for objects like soup or coffee).
