At the Restaurant

Italiano A1A14. Unit 4: Food and Drink

Ordering Food in Italian

When you are at a restaurant in Italy, being polite is very important! Instead of saying ‘I want’ (voglio), Italians use vorrei, which means ‘I would like’.

How to use ‘vorrei’

You can put ‘vorrei’ right in front of any food or drink item. It stays the same no matter what you are ordering!

Adding Polite Words

To be even more polite, you can add words like per favore (please) at the end of your request.

Italian English
Vorrei un’acqua. I would like water.
Vorrei il conto, per favore. I would like the bill, please.

Common Mistakes

Don’t say ‘Voglio’ when ordering. While it grammatically means ‘I want’, it sounds very demanding and rude to native Italian speakers in a restaurant setting!
