Being: The Verb Essere
English · Türkçe
Mastering the Verb Essere (To Be)
Welcome to Unit 2! One of the most important verbs in Italian is essere (to be). Because it is irregular, you simply have to memorize how it changes for each pronoun.
Present Tense Conjugation
- Io sono – I am
- Tu sei – You are (singular, informal)
- Lui è / Lei è – He is / She is
- Noi siamo – We are
- Voi siete – You are (plural)
- Loro sono – They are
Examples:
- Io sono italiano. (I am Italian.)
- Tu sei di Roma. (You are from Rome.)
- Maria è felice. (Maria is happy.)
Common Mistakes
Don’t confuse sei (you are) with sei (the number six)! Also, remember that Italian often drops subject pronouns (like io or tu) because the verb ending already tells you who is speaking.
