Clothing Items in Italian
Welcome to Unit 8! When shopping or talking about fashion, you need to know the names of different clothes. In Italian, nouns have a gender (masculine or feminine) and can be singular or plural. Because clothes come in pairs or groups, many items are plural.
Definite Articles with Clothes
Just like English uses ‘the’, Italian uses different words for ‘the’ depending on the gender and number of the noun:
- la for singular feminine (e.g., la camicia – the shirt)
- il for singular masculine (e.g., il cappotto – the coat)
- i for plural masculine (e.g., i pantaloni – the trousers)
- le for plural feminine (e.g., le scarpe – the shoes)
Common Mistakes
Don’t forget that pantaloni (trousers) is masculine plural in Italian, even though trousers are often singular in meaning in English!
