Genders: Masculine and Feminine
English · Türkçe
Italian Noun Genders: Masculine and Feminine
In Italian, every noun has a grammatical gender: either masculine or feminine. Knowing the gender is essential because it changes the words that go with it, like ‘the’ or ‘a’.
The Golden Rule for -o and -a
- Nouns ending in -o are usually masculine. Example: il ragazzo (the boy).
- Nouns ending in -a are usually feminine. Example: la ragazza (the girl).
Let’s look at more examples:
| Masculine (-o) | Feminine (-a) |
|---|---|
| il libro (the book) | la penna (the pen) |
| il gatto (the cat) | la gatta (the female cat) |
Common Mistakes
Don’t assume a word is masculine just because it ends in -a or vice versa, but for A1 level, -o for masculine and -a for feminine is the most reliable starting point!
