Introduction to Passato Prossimo
In this lesson, you will learn how to express completed actions in the past using the passato prossimo. This tense is equivalent to the English simple past or present perfect (e.g., ‘I ate’, ‘I have traveled’).
How it is formed
The passato prossimo is a compound tense made of two parts:
- An auxiliary verb (either avere or essere) in the present tense.
- A past participle of the main verb.
Most verbs use avere. Regular past participles end in:
- -ato for -are verbs (e.g., parlare -> parlato)
- -uto for -ere verbs (e.g., credere -> creduto)
- -ito for -ire verbs (e.g., finire -> finito)
Common Mistakes
Don’t forget to match the auxiliary verb correctly! Verbs of motion and reflexive verbs typically use essere, while most other verbs use avere.
