Expressing Ability and Obligation in Italian
Today we will learn two essential modal verbs: potere (to be able to / can) and dovere (to have to / must). Modal verbs are followed by another verb in the infinitive form (e.g., parlare, mangiare).
1. Potere (Can / To be able to)
Use potere to talk about ability or permission.
- Io posso parlare italiano. (I can speak Italian.)
- Tu puoi venire? (Can you come?)
2. Dovere (Must / To have to)
Use dovere to talk about duties, rules, and necessity.
- Io devo lavorare oggi. (I must work today.)
- Tu devi studiare. (You have to study.)

Common Mistakes
Remember not to conjugate the second verb! Say “Devo andare” (I must go), not “Devo vado”.
