Subject Pronouns

Italiano A1A12. Unit 2: People and Places

Mastering Italian Subject Pronouns

In Italian, subject pronouns tell us who is performing the action of a verb. Unlike English, Italian pronouns are often omitted because the verb ending usually tells you who is speaking. However, they are essential for emphasis and clarity!

The Italian Pronouns

Note that lei is also used as the polite, formal ‘you’ for addressing strangers or elders!

Common Mistakes

Don’t confuse lui (he) with lei (she). Also, remember that Italian has two different words for ‘you’: tu for friends and family, and voi for a group.
