Talking About Past Trips
When you want to tell someone about your vacation in Italian, you need to use the past tense (Passato Prossimo). Most travel verbs use either essere (to be) or avere (to have) plus a past participle.
The Auxiliary Verbs
- Avere: Used for most action verbs like visitare (to visit) or mangiare (to eat). Example: Ho visitato Roma. (I visited Rome.)
- Essere: Used for movement and state-of-being verbs like andare (to go) or partire (to leave). Example: Sono andato in Italia. (I went to Italy.) Note: The ending changes based on gender (-o, -a, -i, -e).
Common Mistakes
Remember that when you use essere, the past participle must match the gender and number of the subject!
