Unit 4 Review: Food, Drink & Polite Ordering
In this review, we will practice ordering food and drinks in Italian, using the polite phrase vorrei (I would like) and the very important verb avere (to have).
1. Polite Ordering with ‘Vorrei’
When you are at a cafe or restaurant, you can use vorrei followed by a noun or an infinitive verb to order politely:
- Vorrei un caffè. (I would like a coffee.)
- Vorrei un croissant. (I would like a croissant.)
2. The Verb ‘Avere’ (To Have)
To talk about what you possess or what you are having, use avere:
- io ho (I have)
- tu hai (you have)
- lui/lei ha (he/she has)
- noi abbiamo (we have)
Common Mistakes
Don’t confuse sono (I am) with ho (I have). Always use ho when saying your age or what food you are eating: Ho fame (I am hungry / literally: I have hunger).
