Mastering Italian Definite Articles (‘The’)
In English, you only have one word for ‘the’. In Italian, ‘the’ changes depending on the gender (masculine or feminine), number (singular or plural), and the first letter of the noun that follows it!
Singular Masculine Articles
- il: Used before most masculine singular nouns starting with a consonant (e.g., il libro).
- lo: Used before masculine singular nouns starting with s + consonant, z, gn, or x (e.g., lo studente, lo zio).
- l’: Used before masculine singular nouns starting with a vowel (e.g., l’ospedale).
Singular Feminine Articles
- la: Used before feminine singular nouns starting with a consonant (e.g., la banca).
- l’: Used before feminine singular nouns starting with a vowel (e.g., l’università).
Plural Articles
- i: The plural of il (e.g., i libri).
- gli: The plural of lo and l’ for masculine nouns (e.g., gli studenti, gli ospedali).
- le: The plural of la and feminine l’ (e.g., le banche, le università).
Common Mistake: Don’t use il before words starting with ‘s + consonant’. Always use lo studente, never *il studente!
