Expressing Preferences in Italian

In Italian, saying ‘I like’ something depends on whether the thing you like is singular or plural. Unlike English, where the subject ‘I’ likes something, Italian structure literally means ‘it is pleasing to me’ or ‘they are pleasing to me’.

The Rules

Italian English
Mi piace il calcio. I like football.
Mi piacciono i cani. I like dogs.
Non mi piace leggere. I don’t like reading.

Common Mistakes
